The two most popular activities during the Dumpling Festival are preparing rice dumplings and racing dragon boats!

A dragon boat is a paddle boat which is brightly decorated, with the front end of the boat shaped with the head of the dragon and the other end with a scaly tail. A sacred ceremony is performed before every competition to “bring the boat to life” by painting the eyes.

Now, it's you and your little one's turn to customise and decorate your own dragon boat and bring it to life! Enjoy hours of fun and at the same time building up their fine motor skills with play dough activities as well as sewing their own dragon boat pouch. It’s a also great way to learn more about the Chinese tradition of the Dumpling Festival and the legend behind it!

Did You Know

Every year on the 5th day of the 5th month of the Lunar calendar, Chinese celebrates the "Duan Wu" Festival or Dumpling Festival.

The Dumpling Festival is a special day to commemorate a Chinese patriotic poet named "Qu Yuan" who served as a minister in the Chu Kingdom in ancient China. Due to the jealousy of bad evil court officials, Qu Yuan was dismissed and exiled by the emperor.

Feeling disheartened, Qu Yun tied himself to a rock and jumped into the river to protest against the emperor. Being a well-loved minster, people started rowing their boat to the river to search for his body after hearing the news. As they were unable to find their body, they started beating drums and making loud noises by the river to scare off the fishes and making rice dumplings to drop into the river hoping that the fishes will eat the dumplings instead of his body giving rise to the practice of dragon boat.

And since then the Dumpling Festival is born to commemorate this occasion.
